De Jesus was picking his shots, landing a leg kick then shaping up for a knee to the head. However, Pico moved more decisively and before de Jesus knew it, he was seeing stars.
Pico’s devastating right hook knocked the 30-year-old down against the cage, and the American hopped down to pile on even more pain, raining down punches to his rival’s head as he lay flat on his back.
De Jesus tried to protect himself but it was clear to everyone his day was done and the referee jumped in to call off the fight — signalling the first time “Platano” has ever been knocked out in his pro career.
“Oh my God,” one TV commentator said. “Take a look at this shot right here. De Jesus, man he gets bent over, he almost scorpions him with that shot.
“That thing almost takes his head off.”
A former wrestler, Pico is now 7-3 in his MMA career and paid tribute to his team at the Jackson-Winkeljohn Academy in New Mexico, where he trains.
“When I first went to Albuquerque I was broken,” Pico said after the fight. “They rebuilt me. I was broken. I didn’t really tell them but I think they knew.”
Understandably, social media went wild for the jaw-dropping KO.
ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto tweeted: “Wow. If you missed it, I’m sure you’re about to see social media flooded with the replay. Absolute bomb.”
Robbie Fox of Barstool Sports wrote: “Aaron Pico is must watch every time he fights.”
Journalist Andreas Hale added: “Aaron Pico just killed a man. He’s finally figuring this MMA thing out and is going to be a PROBLEM.”
Alan Dawson called it “beautifully horrific” while Peter Caroll said Pico “nearly decapitated de Jesus with that shot”.
