President-elect calls on all Americans to unite after contentious campaign

In their first speech to the nation Saturday evening, the president-elect and vice president-elect pledged to unite the nation. Biden promised to be “president who seeks not to divide but unify” and Harris said, “you ushered in a new day for America.”

President-elect Joe Biden called for an end to “a grim era of demonization in America,” as he pledged to unite a deeply divided nation mired by a pandemic, racial unrest and an economic recession.

Addressing the country hours after being declared the 46th president of the United States, Mr. Biden said he will work “to win the confidence of the whole people.”
