The 22-year-old was competing at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Baton Rouge Regional event (Louisiana) on Friday, when her floor routine ended in a terrifying fall.
Cerio who represents Auburn University was making her first tumbling pass when she failed to nail a blind landing resulting in a double leg fracture and double knee dislocation. The injury ended Cerio’s sporting career, with the gymnast announcing her retirement right after the accident.
On Monday, the gymnast underwent surgery on both legs and she hopes to fully recover before her wedding in June when she will marry her fiance Trey Wood.
Louisiana State University (LSU) President Fieldon King Alexander visited Cerio in hospital and wished her a speedy recovery.
“I had the opportunity to visit @AuburnGym’s @sam_cerio this weekend. What a wonderful, inspiring young lady. I have no doubt she will overcome this injury and go on to do amazing things,” he wrote on Twitter.
